Kyle's work has been in high demand since moving to Lubbock in the fall of '24. He's servicing pianos year-round at the Texas Tech School of Music, all the pianos at South Plains College and was recently asked to tune at Buddy Holly Hall. He's a third generation technician, former classical pianist, and loves making pianos, small and large, sound their best. Please text a photo of your piano and your zip code and we'll get an appointment set up ASAP. Average tuning fee is around $175 but can vary depending on the location and condition of the instrument. Kyle's grandfather always referred to pianos as an example of a perfect compromise. And, design and construction aside, standard equal temperament tuning requires literally thousands of fine adjustments and micro-compromises in order for music to sound great in any key and we are very committed to keeping this art alive! Please reach out, we'd love to hear about your instrument and any of your concerns or questions.

Piano Tuning

Tuning your piano is essential for the maintenance of your instrument. Depending on the frequency of use and the atmospheric conditions of your pianos location, your piano should be tuned at least once or twice per year. If a piano hasn't been tuned in a few years it may require a pitch raise which is a quick tuning to bring it up to par before performing the refined tuning.

Regulation

All pianos sooner or later need regulation. The mechanics and materials of the piano, which are referred to as the action by technicians, go through wear and tear as the instrument is played and ages. With wear comes a sensation of irregularity in the touch & tone of the piano. Regulation involves adjusting parts back to their set specifications, which enables the piano to play at its optimal ability.

Repairs

There are over a thousand moving parts in a piano. Some pianos need to be repaired before they can even be tuned. Most pianos can be repaired in your home, but larger jobs may call for the action being brought back to the shop.

Grand piano cleaning

Removing dust and debris always yields amazing visible results, but perhaps more importantly it can extend the life of the piano strings. Dust holds moisture against metal which leads to rust, weakness and potentially breakage since strings are under enormous tension. Special tools and materials are used to "erase" visible rust and clean the soundboard beneath the strings.

About

Kyle's piano tech background

As a third generation piano technician, Kyle grew up often observing his father and occasionally grandfather tuning, repairing and restoring countless pianos. At this time he was more interested in playing piano and performing and would go on to complete a Bachelor of Music degree at OCU ('99-03). While there he had the unique opportunity to work at his grandfather's widely known piano store, Albert Evans Pianos, in the summertime, learning and practicing tuning pianos by ear (starting with spinets). He then moved back to Houston for a Master's of Music ('03-'06) in solo and collaborative piano performance at the Rice University Shepherd School of Music.  There he took advantage of piano technology course offerings, and was later invited to join as a staff piano technician where he worked alongside two master technicians for twelve years. In this role, Kyle was responsible for tuning, regulating, repairing, and voicing ~ 80 pianos for the music school. Kyle tuned for hundreds of performances including student, faculty, and Emmy award winning guest artist recitals as well as multi-day recording sessions with Emmy winning record producers. In 2021, he also began servicing and tuning beautifully restored 19th century fortepianos for Music in Context, as well as harpsichords for early music and opera performances.

Kyle’s late grandfather, Albert Evans, a master technician and rebuilder, was a founding member of The Piano Technicians Guild in the late 1950s. He operated Albert Evans Pianos in Oklahoma City for about four decades and Kyle’s father, Phillip Evans is still a highly sought after piano technician in Houston and throughout Oklahoma.

Recently, Kyle moved to Lubbock where he’s now tuning independently, as well as teaching private piano lessons. Kyle’s goal is to provide the genuine care and quality of service stemming from three generations of respect for the instrument to any piano he services.
